A Word from Randy, the owner of 5 Star Furnace & Duct Cleaning:
I am often asked: Should I get my ducts cleaned?
Initially, you may think that my answer would be biased, considering I clean ducts for a living, but I usually answer that question with…
That depends.
Let me explain what I mean by that.
You see there really is no set rule for how often you should get your ducts cleaned, but I can give you some guidelines to help you determine if you are due to get a professional furnace and duct cleaning. These are the questions I would ask you if you asked me whether or not you should get your ducts cleaned.
Have your ducts ever been cleaned before?
If your ducts have never been cleaned or you are not sure if your ducts have ever been cleaned, then yes you should get your ducts cleaned. Building a home is dusty and dirty work. Aside from there being sawdust from building the frame, there is drywall dust after the walls are put up. Add to that all the mud and dirt that gets tracked in before your flooring goes in. Now you would think and hope that your contractors would sweep and haul away all that dust, dirt and debris before your floors go in, but, you would be surprised how often we remove construction debris from homes that are getting the ducts cleaned for the first time. That is why if you have never had it done, or you live in a brand new home, I would recommend getting your ducts cleaned.
Do you have a lot of pets?
If you are a pet owner then you know how hair gets everywhere. It is a part of pet ownership we accept. However, a lot of that hair gets pulled into your cold air return and pushed through your HVAC system. From a maintenance point of view, the accumulation of all this hair will clog your air filter reducing your air flow. That reduced air flow can affect the performance of your furnace and air conditioner, making your furnace and air conditioner work harder and less efficiently. Reduced air flow can also cause your components in your furnace to overheat and fail prematurely. So if you have pets that shed, then yes you should get your ducts cleaned.
Do You Or A Family Member Suffers From Allergies Or Asthma?
Although the CDC will state that there are no health benefits to cleaning your ducts. This same organization has also stated that indoor air is 4-10 times more polluted than outdoor air. If you finding yourself sniffling and sneezing on a regular basis, then removing the dust, dirt, and allergens from your ducts should help you breathe easier. Particularly if you experience relief during the Spring and Fall when the furnace and air conditioner rarely have to run and the furnace fan is not blowing all these irritating allergens around your house and up your nose. I recommend annual cleanings and high quality air filters if you have indoor air quality concerns.
Do You Live In A Dusty Environment?
5Star Furnace and Duct Cleaning serves homeowners in both Winnipeg, Steinbach and South East Manitoba. With all the agricultural land around us, it can get dusty at times. If you live on a gravel road, every vehicle that drives by your home can send a plume of dust directly at your home. Eventually, all this dust will find its way into your home and pulled into your ducts through the cold air return. Here are some telltale signs that you have environmental dust and dirt coming into your home. Do your carpets have dark lines of soiling along your baseboards? Does your carpet have dark soiling stains radiating out from your cold air returns? These are filtration stains, where your carpet is actually as an air filter. This is indicative that you need to get your ducts clean?
Have You Had Exterminators Out?
One of the joys of country and suburban living is that sometimes we get rodents and birds into our home. If you have had some critters scurrying around, then after the exterminator is down we should come over to clean your ducts. You will want to remove any and all fecal deposits that may be lying in your ducts. At the same time, if a mouse, bird or another unwanted pest should happen to expire in your ductwork, we can remove them for you. You will want to do this before a heating or cooling season starts and your furnace fan starts running. Otherwise, you could have a horrendous smell of decay going through your home. Have us come in a week to ten days after your exterminator has finished removing your unwanted pests.
Should you get your ducts cleaned?
Well, that depends. However, if any of the above criteria apply to you, then yes I would recommend you get your ducts cleaned. Give 5Star Furnace and duct cleaning a call at 204-777-7827 to book your duct cleaning appointment.
